  • 1 lb (450g) fresh green beans, trimmed and cut into 1-2 inch pieces (or 2 cans of green beans, drained)
  • 1 can (10.5 oz) cream of mushroom soup
  • 1/2 cup whole milk or heavy cream
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper (or to taste)
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional, for a cheesy twist)
  • 1 1/2 cups crispy fried onions (store-bought or homemade)


Instructions

Step 1: Prep the Green Beans

  1. For Fresh Green Beans:

    • Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add green beans and cook for 4-5 minutes until tender-crisp. Drain and immediately transfer them to a bowl of ice water to stop cooking. Drain again and set aside.
  2. For Canned Green Beans:

    • Simply drain and rinse.

Step 2: Make the Casserole Mixture

  1. In a mixing bowl, whisk together the cream of mushroom soup, milk or cream, garlic powder, and black pepper.
  2. Stir in the green beans and 1/2 cup of the crispy fried onions. If adding cheese, mix it in here.

Step 3: Assemble the Casserole

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Pour the green bean mixture into a greased 9x9-inch (or similar) baking dish. Spread it out evenly.

Step 4: Bake the Casserole

  1. Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 20 minutes.
  2. Remove the foil, sprinkle the remaining crispy fried onions on top, and bake for an additional 10-15 minutes until the top is golden brown and bubbly.
